Obviously, I have not listed every online retailer of designer, brand-name eyewear. If you find an amazing one that I've completely overlooked, shoot me an email! If you're looking to spend less on your specs, check out the other pages for more recommendations.
Glasses.com
Hands down, this site is doing it right. Sleek and far more modern than any of the others listed below, just the interface makes you want to buy from this place. (No I am not in any way related to Glasses.com. No affiliation whatsoever. If I were, it would be incest, because I want to marry this site and pop out a brood of children's frames.) Free at-home try-on. Free shipping. Free 30-day, no-hassle returns. A deal-of-the-day on their homepage. The coolest iPad app I think I've ever seen. Only conceivable flaw? No search-by-size feature. If they'd fix that (make it possible to find frames by size), we'd be BFF.
Coastal
Coastal.com spans the gap between expensive and affordable frames and does it pretty well. The site exclusively carries designer name brands, but the frames seem to be closeouts or similar, like a TJ Maxx-type retailer. Coastal gets big love by offering a "first pair free" promotion (limited selection of frames), free 366-day returns, an awesome virtual try-on feature, and good sales and special offers. Just ask the 1M fans on Facebook.
Frames Direct
My very first online optical purchase, several years ago, was through Frames Direct. This company has been online since 1996. Their selection is nearly unparalleled, and the site is easy to use. 30-day returns, but read the policy closely. They have "secret sales" and contests, etc., if you "like" them on Facebook.
Eyeglasses.com
This site has heaps of info about eyewear. Heaps. No, really. On top of the heap is a good selection of frames, free shipping over $55, and a 30-day return policy. No free returns, though.
Simply Eyeglasses has a good selection and an "A" rating with the BBB. Free shipping over $89. On Facebook.
